Tihar Food Sel Roti Recipe
Sel roti is a traditional, homemade, sweet, ring-shaped rice bread/doughnut that is consumed in Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling district and Kalimpong district. It is mostly prepared during Dashain and Tihar, widely celebrated Hindu festivals of the Nepali people.

Required Ingredients
- Ghee
- Sugar
- Soaked rice
- Oil
- Rice- 2.5 pound
- Half litre of water or milk
- One pinch of soda
- Coconut mixtures, cashew nuts
Required utensils
- Two sticks
- Deep frying pan
- Funnel shaped utensil to pour up a mixture, otherwise you can use a half size cut bottle
- A cup to pour up mixture in pan
Direction
- Wash and soak rice overnight, drain excess water.
- Mix ghee and sugar and grind into fine paste. The paste should be fine and buttery texture
- Continuously stir the mixture.
- Cover it and leave at the room temperature for 1-2 hours to melt and mix all the ingredients
- Heat pan with cooking oil. The pan should be deep enough to float sel and the base should be flat.
- Watch for vapor/smoke from the oil or see the picking stick float on the oil.
- Pour the mixture with a continuous ring into hot oil till they become brown/golden.
- Confirm both sides are brown.
